WALDORF EDUCATION IN UKRAINE
A Growing Movement
Waldorf education — the world’s largest independent school movement — was founded over a century ago by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. Today (May, 2025), there are 1281 Waldorf and Rudolf Steiner schools in 70 countries and 1968 Waldorf Kindergartens in more than 60 countries.
National Recognition
From 2001 to 2014, a nationwide scientific and methodological study examined the effectiveness of Waldorf pedagogy. Following its positive results, Waldorf education received official recognition within Ukraine’s national education framework.
Academic Validation
Over the past two decades, Ukrainian educators and researchers have conducted in-depth studies on key aspects of Waldorf education. Their findings have been positively received by the national academic circles. Eleven doctoral dissertations on Waldorf pedagogy have been completed in Ukraine, confirming its educational value and effectiveness. Notably, the core principles of Waldorf education align closely with the vision of Ukraine’s educational reform, known as the New Ukrainian School.
Waldorf in Practice
Waldorf kindergartens and schools are currently active in Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Odesa, Kharkiv, Horodenka, Kamianets-Podilskyi, and Mykolaiv. These institutions successfully integrate the international Waldorf approach with the requirements of Ukraine’s state education standards.
International Collaboration
Waldorf initiatives in Ukraine maintain strong ties with international educational networks. Ukrainian teachers and educators regularly participate in international conferences, teacher trainings, and academic exchange programs.
The Association of Waldorf Initiatives of Ukraine (AWIU)Â represents the country in several leading international organizations, including:
- IAO – International Association for Steiner/Waldorf Education in Central and Eastern Europe
- ECSWE – European Council for Steiner Waldorf Education
- IASWECE – International Association for Steiner/Waldorf Early Childhood Education
- The Hague Circle – International Conference of Waldorf/Steiner Schools
AWIU plays a key role in the development of Waldorf education in Ukraine by supporting policy dialogue, curriculum development, research projects, teacher training, and innovative educational practices.
